Gem is an exciting new European pear variety developed by Dr. Richard Bell. Fruit is medium to large and firm when freshly picked having good flavor but really ripens into a terrifically sweet, soft dessert pear after 3 to 6 weeks of storage. It is a great storage pear (up to 3 months!) which can be a great thing for home growers, giving a much longer time to enjoy eating the fruit. Fruit flavor is similar to Bartlett but with a subtle spicy taste.
Trees have a long picking window are precocious (fruit early), productive, and resistant to fireblight. Moderately susceptible to psylla, powdery mildew and scab.

Trees are on OHxF87 rootstock, a premium semi-dwarf rootstock (65% standard size) that produces a tree that will grow a European pear to a mature height of 8-12' tall. Trees bear heavy and early compared to traditional rootstock trees. OHxF87 is very winter hardy, resistant to fire blight and pear decline.
